We live in an increasingly digital world, where just about everyone is carrying a recording device (or two) in their pocket at all times.

Qantas Updating Their Conditions of Carriage

As noted by Australian Frequent Flyer, Australian airline Qantas updated their Conditions of Carriage earlier this month. The contract of carriage is something that all passengers have to say they agree with in order to purchase a ticket or check in online. Specifically, Qantas added three bullet points to Section 12.1 which is a section regarding “Conduct During Flight”

  • Comply with any reasonable directions issued by the crew;
  • Use electronic devices (excluding hearing aids and heart pacemakers) when and as directed and in the case of any failure to comply with the direction we may retain the device;
  • Seek consent before filming or photographing Qantas Group staff, contractors or other customers.

Is A Ban On Taking Pictures And Video A Good Thing?

On the whole, this seems fairly reasonable. While I’m sure nobody is going o stop you from taking pictures out the window, a picture of your meal or of your own traveling companions, most people probably don’t want to be the unwitting stars of your latest social media story. I can imagine that airline staff also don’t want to be filmed, though in some cases the existence of such video is the only thing that has shined a light on poor behavior by flight staff. I can certainly imagine a scenario where there is a disagreement between a flight attendant and a passenger, the passenger starts recording, and that along gets them booted off the flight.
