While I would not consider myself an “extreme” traveler (I am trying to visit every COUNTY in the United States but not every COUNTRY in the world), I do enjoy maps and geography. So I was intrigued to see that someone had put together a resource detailing the status of (just about?) every border crossing in the world. For people that are traveling to shall we say “more obscure” countries, crossing country borders can be tricky, and the status of various border crossings can change rapidly.

JOL.Earth – Overland Border Crossings

The new resource is at https://overland.jol.earth/ and is a graphical representation of the world, with each overland border crossing marked and categorized.

Each crossing is categorized and color coded. Green means that the crossing is open, such as this one on the Peace Bridge between the US and Canada

Red icons mean that the crossing is closed.

Yellow icons signify that the crossing is conditionally open, while light blue are ferries and dark blue are bilateral crossings that are open for citizens of the two countries.

The Bottom Line

Overland by Jol.earth is a relatively new app and website that catalogs the status of every overland border crossing between two countries in the world. While the status of different crossings can obviously change rapidly and it would behoove you to double check status before trying to cross, this can provide valuable high level information.
