Buying miles and points can be a good idea, but only in a few instances. If you are going to buy miles or points, you’ll want to make sure that you’re doing so when they’re on sale or during a promotion. Currently, you can buy Hawaiian miles under a tiered promotion offering up to 50% bonus miles when purchasing. Depending on your needs, this can be an awesome deal.

The Details

This promo is going on now through February 21st. Click here to navigate to the purchase page.  I have seen reports that the bonus shows up differently for different people – for me, it was a tiered bonus with a maximum of up to 50% miles. Your mileage may vary depending on the promotion that is targeted to you.

  • Buy 3,000-9,000 miles, get a 30% bonus
  • Buy 10,000-19,000 miles, get a 40% bonus
  • Buy 20,000-100,000 miles, get a 50% bonus

Purchases are processed through Points.com, which means that you’ll want to buy these with a card that maximizes everyday spend, like the Citi Double Cash.

Normally, each 1,000 Hawaiian miles would cost $29.56 with tax included; that is 2.9 cents per mile! Nobody values Hawaiian miles at more than 2 cents per mile, so at the normal rate, it doesn’t make sense to buy. Buying at least 40,000 miles with this promotion nets you additional bonus miles, which with tax brings the cost of a point down to a more reasonable value.

You can use your miles on Hawaiian Airlines flights itself, or on any of their partners. And now that Hawaiian and Alaska Airlines are partners and you can transfer miles between them, you can transfer Hawaiian miles to Alaska and use Alaska miles to travel on part of the oneworld airline alliance, where you can use Alaska miles for travel on most (if not all) oneworld partners (see below)

Converting To Alaska Airlines MileagePlan Miles

While I’ve historically never really gotten TOO excited about getting a ton of Hawaiian miles, that changed last year when Alaska and Hawaiian announced a merger. Now, you can transfer Hawaiian and Alaska miles back and forth at a 1:1 rate. So if you get Hawaiian miles (whether it’s through buying miles such as through this deal, through a credit card, flying or in any other way), you can transfer them to Alaska miles, where you can use them as valuable Alaska miles. So this could be a valuable opportunity to pick up more Alaska miles.

Even though we never recommend speculatively purchasing miles, I’m sorely tempted by this. Are any of you going to take advantage?
