Candlewood SuitesInvalid request error occurred. is a extended stay brand from Intercontinental Hotels Group.  Their brand promise is that they “offer a more casual kind of longer stay, where you’ll always feel at home, at your best and really productive while on the road”.  I felt like I had stayed at a Candlewood Suites hotel before but maybe I had never actually done it.  This weekend though, as part of my epic 1800 mile road trip through Texas and Louisiana (and slight parts of Mississippi and Arkansas), I ended up staying at the Candlewood Suites in Longview Texas (between Dallas and Shreveport on the map below), since it was only 5000 points on the current IHG Point Breaks list.

Do Candlewood Suites offer breakfast? What I found out?

Our flight arrived into the Austin airport about 5pm, so by the time we drove out to Longview, it was pretty late.  We just checked in and got to our room.  It was a nice room

a room with two beds

and featured a mini kitchenette (which we didn’t use)

a kitchen with a black refrigerator and a black microwave

I guess I just assumed that Candlewood Suites offered free breakfast.  But when I looked through the hotel information, I could not find anything about the breakfast time or what Candlewood Suites offered for breakfast.  I went out to the front desk area and immediately saw that there was no real space to have a breakfast, and indeed the gentleman at the front desk confirmed that there was no breakfast.  Again, I was surprised because I felt like I had stayed at Candlewood Suites hotels before that HAD offered breakfast, and when I think about other hotels that are in the same category as Candlewood Suites (they are classified as “Midscale” so La Quinta, Quality Inn, Sleep Inn, Wingate), they nearly all offer at least a continental breakfast!

At Candlewood Suites they offer the “Candlewood Cupboard” which has overpriced snacks and things.

Thanks but no thanks – if I want overpriced snacks for my road trip I’ll just pick them up at the gas station 🙂

How to tell if your Candlewood Suites offers free breakfast

But after looking around, there ARE some Candlewood Suites that offer free breakfast.  So while it is somewhat frustrating to not know what to expect from staying at a Candlewood Suites (the way you can expect delicious cinnamon rolls at a Holiday Inn Express), there is a way to find out so you can manage expectations.  The simple trick to tell if your Candlewood Suites hotel offers breakfast (hot, continental or otherwise) is to just look on the hotel website.  Wikipedia suggests that “Candlewood Suites does not offer a free continental or hot breakfast at every location, though certain locations may offer one”.  I could not find a Candlewood Suites location that offers free breakfast, but if you’re aware of one, please leave it in the comments

And yes, I do understand that some people may prefer to do breakfast on their own rather than eat a low quality continental breakfast, but I am a planner and so I like to at least know what I’m getting into
