The Frequent Flyer Bonuses website shares a tidbit about a new bonus for the Royal Air Maroc Safar Flyer frequent flyer program.
If you create a Family Account between now and September 30th, you’ll receive 5000 bonus miles. A Safar Family account is similar to the British Airways Household account, where multiple people can have their own frequent flyer accounts but pool each of their miles into a household account.
To sign up for the Safar Family account, visit this page, fill out the form, scan it and send it in. I assume if you’re not already a Safar member, you’ll have to sign up for that first.
What will 5000 Royal Air Maroc miles get you?
5000 Royal Air Maroc miles IS enough for a one-way ticket within Morocco.
And while that may not be super useful, you never know when you might be planning on going to Morocco :-). They are also partners with Iberia and Etihad, and it’s using Etihad miles that you can get a pretty sweet deal on flying from New York to Casablanca (22,000 miles in economy or 44,000 miles in business)
There are also rumors that Royal Air Maroc is in talks to join the Star Alliance, though at this point that is just speculation.
Avios – the real advantage
The real advantage to this deal is that Royal Air Maroc has signed an agreement to start using Avios, the currency used by British Airways, Iberia (and soon to be Aer Lingus). So those 5000 Safar miles should soon be 5000 Avios, which would theoretically be able to be transferred to British Airways or Iberia Avios (similar to how you can now transfer British Airways Avios to Iberia Avios and vice versa). And even though you can no longer get 4500 Avios flights in North America, you can in other parts of the world, or use them for other short flights.
