IHG has started off 2021 with some good news for IHG Rewards Club members. They have added a promotion for IHG Rewards members to earn more points and have made it easier to achieve Elite status this year. IHG also announced some changes to the program. This will provide members additional flexibility with the free night certificates and expiration of points. Most IHG members should have received an e-mail with the details. If you need to join IHG Rewards you can do so at this link.

What’s the IHG Promotion?

IHG is offering 2,000 Elite Qualifying bonus points with every two nights spent at participating hotels. The new promotion launched January 20. For each qualifying stay from January 20 to March 31, 2021, members will earn 2,000 bonus points, up to a maximum of 70,000 points. Registration began January 13, 2021. Check out the following link for terms and conditions.

How Do I Get Elite Status in 2021?

IHG made some adjustments to the Elite status qualifications to make it easier to obtain in 2021. These include the following:

  • IHG has extended the 25% reduction (nights or points) in Elite qualifying criteria through 2021.
  • All qualifying nights stayed in 2020 for Elite members will be rolled over into 2021. These nights will count towards status earned in 2021. 2020 rollover nights should be automatically reflected in member accounts.
  • IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit cardmembers will continue to receive automatic Platinum Elite status.

What Program Changes Occurred?

The last positive development is to extend earned benefits. Free night certificates from the co-branded credit cards with an original 2021 expiration date have been extended. These certificates can now be redeemed through Dec. 31, 2021. In addition, IHG continued the pause on points expiration through June 30, 2021, for Club members. Keep in mind that Elite status points never expire. Details of all of the program updates are available here.

Conclusion

We are starting to see more loyalty programs extend benefits from 2020 and offer new promotions. Given the difficult travel environment in 2020 and the continuation of the trend into 2021 this makes sense. Hopefully we will see more programs provide these types of offers and extensions of benefits over the next few weeks.

Are you planning to take advantage of these offers? Is there a loyalty program that you would like to see offer new promotions or an extension of benefits? Let us know in the comments below!
