hilton-logoLast week, there was quite the uproar as Hyatt started giving out Hyatt Diamond status to just about anyone who could prove even mid-tier status in any competing hotel chain.

Tragically, it appears that there was a cutoff (some say 12pm Friday), and anyone who requested a status match after that time was getting matched to Hyatt Platinum, with only SPG Platinum members being matched to Hyatt Diamond.

Hilton getting in on the act

I originally saw it on Frequent Miler, but an official Hilton representative posted on Flyertalk

We’re winding down for the Thanksgiving holiday and, as a heads up, I will be out of the office until Monday, but I wanted to let you know about our status match program…

We’ve been receiving a number of requests and yes, we do match status from other programs and we’d love to be your travel home.

  1. We are matching status for 2016. To make sure you’re all set for the year, please submit your request by January 11, 2016. You’ll enjoy that status through March 2017.
  2. All you need is something that shows your elite tier in another program and an HHonors number.
  3. Email us at HHonorMyStatus@hilton.com and we’ll help get you started.

Please note it may take a couple of days to process given the Thanksgiving holiday. We promise to process requests as quickly as possible and any request submitted prior to January 11, 2016, will be processed in time to enjoy your new status for the entire year.

What will they match to / from?

The real question is what they’ll match to.  I assume any true top-tier status (like any of you guys that just got Hyatt Diamond) will be matched to Hilton HHonors Diamond.  For those of us who just have mid-tier status, I could make cases for matching to Gold or Diamond.

The case for matching to Diamond

Since everyone seems to have Hilton Gold (it’s not hard to get), it’s hard to see them giving out a status that many people already have.

The case for matching to Gold

I think they’ll be pretty inundated with tons of status matches and won’t want to dilute their top status.

Personally, I sent in my note, but I doubt I’ll get Hilton Diamond.  Even if I do, Hilton Diamond is not NEARLY as exciting as Hyatt Diamond, and Hilton Gold already gives me most of the things that I am interested in for a status match.  It was pointed out to me that Hilton Diamonds do get better upgrades and guaranteed lounge access, but if you really want Hilton Diamond, you can get it by spending on their affiliated credit card

Good luck out there!
