I got a letter in the mail recently from Citibank with a (possibly targeted?) letter offering 3x miles on select categories for a limited time
Sorry for the quality on the picture, but what it says is that until 3/31, I will earn 3x on any spending in the following categories:
- Grocery Stores
- Gas Stations
- Drugstores
- Restaurants
- Commuter Transportation Locations
This was for my Citibank American AAdvantage card (not a Platinum card). I originally thought that I was going to get a bonus 3x on this spending, but it looks like the bonus is only an additional 2x plus the normal 1x you get for spending on the card. I actually am still on a retention offer for this card that I got a few months ago where they offer a bonus 1x on spending on the card if I spend $1000 in a month on the card (for the next 16 months). So I could potentially earn 4x points on some spending.
You can earn up to 2500 bonus American AAdvantage miles, so you’ll need to spend $1,250 on the card in the appropriate categories.
From Pizza in Motion, I see that there are a couple of versions of this offer with different categories, so your mileage may vary, but most holders of Citibank / American credit cards (including the Platinum / Executive card) got an offer in the mail – so check your mail!
Did you get an offer? Are you planning on taking advantage?

Why do they snail mail these offers? Seems a bit old fashioned, no?
I received the same offer lasts week via email (not snail mail.) Then again, I opted to receive everything electronically.
Oh and yes, Points with a Crew, I’ll be taking advantage of this! 🙂 I’m not an AA flyer so I’ll do whatever I can to earn AAdvantage miles!
I received a similar offer first by email then by regular mail. I believe it is targeted because I have two AA cards and received the offer only on one of my cards.
Right – same with me. I got it on only one of my 2 cards. It does seem to be pretty heavily targeted though as many people have reported getting an offer
I got 3x on Online Purchase (technically an additional 2pts/$)
That’s a pretty good one!
Load $1250 to your Redbird at a Target that’s listed as a grocery store. Done.
Citi excludes Supercenters from grocery category for the purpose of bonus points. So even if Target is coded as grocery, you may not receive bonus points.
