I got a letter in the mail recently from Citibank with a (possibly targeted?) letter offering 3x miles on select categories for a limited time

aadvantage-3x-special-offer

Sorry for the quality on the picture, but what it says is that until 3/31, I will earn 3x on any spending in the following categories:

  • Grocery Stores
  • Gas Stations
  • Drugstores
  • Restaurants
  • Commuter Transportation Locations

This was for my Citibank American AAdvantage card (not a Platinum card).  I originally thought that I was going to get a bonus 3x on this spending, but it looks like the bonus is only an additional 2x plus the normal 1x you get for spending on the card.  I actually am still on a retention offer for this card that I got a few months ago where they offer a bonus 1x on spending on the card if I spend $1000 in a month on the card (for the next 16 months).  So I could potentially earn 4x points on some spending.

You can earn up to 2500 bonus American AAdvantage miles, so you’ll need to spend $1,250 on the card in the appropriate categories.

From Pizza in Motion, I see that there are a couple of versions of this offer with different categories, so your mileage may vary, but most holders of Citibank / American credit cards (including the Platinum / Executive card) got an offer in the mail – so check your mail!

Did you get an offer?  Are you planning on taking advantage?
