A few years ago, I had the idea to take a trip where I maximized one calendar day by traveling east across the international date line. Originally I had thought about doing it as part of a New Year’s Eve celebration, but I then decided that I wanted to do it as a birthday trip where I got to celebrate my birthday twice. Since I had a “round number” birthday in 2026, I decided this was the year to do it. I’ve already written a few posts about it and will write some more over the next few weeks, but I wanted to introduce the trip

2026 “Double Birthday” Trip
This was a trip with just my wife and I, and we kicked it off a few days before my birthday, by flying premium economy from San Francisco to Manila in the Philippines. After a few days in the Philippines, we continued with a business class flight on Japan Airlines from Manila to Tokyo. The trip continued with another few days in Tokyo, culminating with watching a sumo practice on the morning of my birthday.
Then, at 10pm on my birthday, we flew Delta Premium Plus from Tokyo Haneda to Honolulu, where the flight landed at 10 IN THE MORNING, on my birthday again. So I got to celebrate a double birthday with another birthday on Waikiki Beach.

It was a great day (errr 2 days?) and by the time the day ended, I had a total of a 41 hour birthday. I hope you’ll enjoy reading about this trip.
