World of Hyatt Devaluation

As much as many of us joyed at the new World of Hyatt Credit Card and its perks, all good things must come to an end. Hyatt has officially announced that there will be a change to their award bookings.

world of hyatt

Beginning November 1st, World of Hyatt members will be able to book premium rooms at the following rates.

Hotel Category Standard Room Points Per Night Regency/Grand Club Points Per Night Standard Suite Points Per Night NEW: Premium Suite Points Per Night
1 5,000 7,000 8,000 10,000
2 8,000 12,000 13,000 16,000
3 12,000 17,000 20,000 24,000
4 15,000 21,000 24,000 30,000
5 20,000 27,000 32,000 40,000
6 25,000 33,000 40,000 50,000
7 30,000 39,000 48,000 60,000

World of Hyatt Points + Cash

If you are the type to save miles by using points + cash, your new award chart will look like the following for booking a standard room at MGM Resort Destinations in Las Vegas and Hyatt Residence Club Resorts, along with Hyatt hotels and resorts including Miraval Resorts.

Hotel Category Standard Room

Points Per Night

NEW: Standard Room

Points + Cash Per Night

1 5,000 2,500  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard rooms
2 8,000 4,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard rooms
3 12,000 6,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard rooms
4 15,000 7,500  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard rooms
5 20,000 10,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard rooms
6 25,000 12,500  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard rooms
7 30,000 15,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard rooms

The points rates are the same, but the cash copays now being tied to the Standard rate is a HUGE devaluation! It used to be that the cash copays were a fixed amount (from $50 for Category 1 to $300 for Category 7). Tying it to the standard rate now removes your ability to get any sort of outsized value, though there may be cases at the extremes where 50% of the rate is lower than the old fixed copays

One other point is that the “Standard” rate is often not the best rate available, as members of AAA or members of the World of Hyatt loyalty program often have access to better rates

World of Hyatt Standard Suites

One benefit of this new change is that you can now use points + cash to book standard suites at Hyatt hotels and resorts and Hyatt Residence Club resorts.  Here is the award chart

Hotel Category Standard Suite

Points Per Night

NEW: Standard Suite

Points + Cash Per Night

1 8,000 4,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard suites
2 13,000 6,500  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard suites
3 20,000 10,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard suites
4 24,000 12,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard suites
5 32,000 16,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard suites
6 40,000 20,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard suites
7 48,000 24,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for standard suites

World of Hyatt Premium Suites

This is what the award looks like for points + cash premium suites.

Hotel Category Premium Suite

Points Per Night

NEW: Premium Suite

Points + Cash Per Night

1 10,000 5,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for premium suites
2 16,000 8,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for premium suites
3 24,000 12,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for premium suites
4 30,000 15,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for premium suites
5 40,000 20,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for premium suites
6 50,000 25,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for premium suites
7 60,000 30,000  + 50% of the Standard Rate for premium suites

It is unfortunate to see the devaluing of this program. However, I still see a ton of value in the World of Hyatt program, especially when you can stay at properties like Park Hyatt Maldives.

Where to get Hyatt points

These changes do make Cash + Points bookings much less attractive as opposed to full points bookings, especially now that full points bookings get elite credit with World of Hyatt. Thankfully it’s quite easy to rack up a bunch of Hyatt points.

First is the Chase Hyatt credit card, which is currently giving a welcome offer of up to 60,000 Hyatt points after spending $3000 in the first 3 months and $6,000 in the first 6 months of having the card. Plus it’s a card that you can still get even if you’re over 5/24a close-up of a credit card

And Hyatt is a transfer partner from Chase, which means points earned from the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Freedom, Chase Ink or other cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards

(SEE ALSO: Why I keep recommending the Chase Sapphire Preferred for people just starting out)

You can find some of the good offers for Chase cards at the Top Credit Card Offers page in the top menu of the site
