I got an email the other day from Plastiq, offering 2x American Express Membership Rewards on payments with Plastiq
Further review of this promotion makes it look like the only reason that you’re getting 2x Membership Rewards from Plastiq is that Plastiq is being coded as a small business by American Express, and currently (through the end of the year), you can get double points by “Shopping Small”. Note that you DO have to register your card for the Shop Small promotion, which you can do here. You’ll have to register once for every card you want to register.
There has been confirmation that you can earn 2x points on (just about) ANY American Express card, including the Delta Skymiles cards, Starwood SPG cards, and Hilton Amex cards (in addition to American Express cards)
I have written before about my experiences getting “free” money by paying my mortgage with Plastiq. I have been paying a couple of the mortgages for some of my rental properties with Plastiq for a few months now and have had nothing but good experiences (and 3x Citi ThankYou points!)
Plastiq fees
The typical fee with Plastiq is 2% for Mastercard and 3% for American Express. Currently there is a promotion going on that will give you a 1.75% fee for paying with a Mastercard, or 2.25% with an American Express, if you schedule 6 or more payments by October 31st.
As I’ve mentioned before, I use a Citi ThankYou AT&T Access More card for my Plastiq payments, which gives 3x ThankYou points on purchases with Plastiq. You can no longer sign up for the AT&T Access More card, but there have been reports of people still being able to get the Access More card.
If you haven’t signed up for Plastiq, you will earn $200 fee-free dollars by signing up through my link, and I will also earn a bonus.

I can only comment on my own experience in which I closed my account. The fees are high and there is just something a bit odd about this site. For me the idea of paying for the points and allowing someone else “write checks” using my CC is a bit unnerving.
Just saying
Certainly you have to do what makes you feel comfortable. As I mentioned, I’ve never had a problem personally
Me neither, I mean depending how you’re set up, I can’t imagine what the big deal is. You’re simply buying dollars at a discount if done right
I registered using your link. How long til the $200 Plastiq feefree dollars post?
I believe you get it after your first payment over $20
thanks dan!! i’ve also registered with your link and just did my first rent payment 😀 (5500 MR doesn’t offset 67$ fee but it’s better than plainly losing 3% with my landlord website)
Tom – glad that worked out for you and thanks for using my link!
If you use a Business Platinum card and make a Plastiq payment over $5,000, does anyone know how many MR points would be rewarded? Would it be 2.5 (1.5 regular reward rate for a purchase over $5,000, plus 1 bonus point for “Shop Small”) or would you just earn the 2 points for Shop Small?
I have both an American Express Gold Preferred Rewards card and an American Express Platinum Delta card. Which card, if any, would be better for me to sign up with? Thanks
Depends. Would you rather have 2 Membership Rewards or 2 Delta Skymiles?
I may be dense (or not), but does this logic make sense? I just received the Amex Platinum business and planned to charge $9500 of tuition toward the $15,000 minimum spend. My daughter’s college charges a 2.75% fee ($261.25). Instead, as I am not currently registered with Plastiq, I would get $200 for registering through your link and then pay 3% ($285) to charge the $9500. I assume they send a check or electronic transfer to the college? So it would end up costing $85 net and–once registering for the Small Business deal– I’d earn 2 points (19,000 points). That’s a sweet deal. Am I missing something? Thanks!
Seems right. You could always just pay a smaller amount first to try it out
