Via The Flight Deal, there are some great flights out of United hubs on Delta to several cities in Central America.  This is a common strategy by airlines to attack other airlines hubs, in an attempt to woo travelers to try out the new airline.  Earlier this month, we had American attacking United hubs with a $220 roundtrip fare to Bogota, Colombia, now it’s Delta’s turn!

This one is good from

  • San Francisco (SFO)
  • Newark (EWR)
  • Washington DC (IAD)
  • Chicago (ORD)
  • Cleveland (CLE)
  • Houston (IAH)
  • Denver (DEN)

and possibly others.  Going from any of those cities to several cities in Central America, such as

  • San Salvador, El Salvador [SAL] – $273 (or $122 one way)
  • San Pedro Sula, Honduras [SAP] – $302 ($122 one way)
  • San Jose, Costa Rica [SJO] – $309 ($138 one way)
  • Guatemala City, Guatemala [GUA] – $329 ($152 one way)

I was able to find several combinations for roundtrip prices from October 2015 out through may 2016.  Here’s an example from Google Flights

Where to credit these flights

If you’ll remember, as part of Delta Skymiles 2015, Delta only awards miles based on the cost of the flight.  If you are a “basic” member, you’ll only get 5 times the base fare price of $178, or 890 redeemable miles.  As long as your flights are on Delta metal, you’ll do better crediting to Alaska, which will give you 50% of the flown miles.  In the case above (from SFO to SAL), you’d get 2,657 Alaska miles.

If you are interested, I’d book sooner rather than later!  While I wouldn’t count these as “mistake fares”, more popular dates WILL sell out fast
